Radisys® Corporation announced that NEC Corporation, a leader in the integration of IT and network technologies, has selected Radisys’ Trillium® TOTALeNodeB™ small cell software to enable its LTE Small Cell (Femto/Pico/Microcell) network. Radisys’ field-proven LTE-TDD & FDD solution enables NEC to quickly deploy LTE small cells that help operators overcome the challenges of coverage and exploding traffic volumes by delivering improved signal quality and optimizing bandwidth for a high quality end user experience.

“After our initial picocell deployment to enable our customers to deliver robust outdoor coverage, we plan to leverage Radisys’ TOTALeNodeB solution across our small cell product portfolio, thereby lowering our time-to-market.”

The shift to LTE-TDD for small cell deployments is being driven by consumers’ demands for downloading content on their mobile devices – particularly mobile video content such as Netflix or YouTube – anytime, anywhere. LTE-TDD leverages unpaired spectrum allowing downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) traffic to travel in both directions on the same frequency band. It provides a complementary approach to FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) which uses paired spectrum to allocate one frequency band for upload and one for download. Radisys’ TOTALeNodeB small cell software supports both FDD and TDD deployments, delivering a comprehensive LTE solution that can easily scale from small to large deployments.

“We have selected Radisys as a strategic partner to enable our outdoor picocell product portfolio as it is the leader in small cell software, bringing expertise in deploying LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD,” said Katsumi Tanoue, assistant general manager, Mobile Radio Access Network Division, NEC. “After our initial picocell deployment to enable our customers to deliver robust outdoor coverage, we plan to leverage Radisys’ TOTALeNodeB solution across our small cell product portfolio, thereby lowering our time-to-market.”

“This marks another customer win for our TOTALeNodeB solution, and further augments our position as the leader in small cell software solutions with more than 40 small cell design wins worldwide,” said Todd Mersch, general manager, Software and Solutions, Radisys. “We’re excited to enter the outdoor picocell arena with NEC. The combination of our TOTALeNodeB software and our skilled Professional Services team’s expertise will enable NEC to deliver industry-leading performance along with extensive coverage to its customer base.”
