Hitachi Communication Technologies America, Inc. and Athena Wireless Communications, Inc. today announced that they have completed interoperability testing (IOT) between Hitachi’s Mobile Core and Athena’s Pixie™ LTE small cell. Hitachi’s Mobile Core software products, including ER5000 MME, SGSN and SmallCell Gateway, are now running as a virtualized solution that enables quick deployment, support for small to very large systems with unlimited scalability for signaling and data throughput.

Mobile operators face many challenges with the mass deployment of small cells to address ever increasing data demands. Major challenges include managing growth of both signaling and throughput. The innovative architecture of Hitachi’s ER5000 SmallCell Gateway enables operators to independently grow signaling and data capacity as network and data demand evolve.
